History of the social sciences

Main article: History of the social sciences

The word "science" is older than its modern use. Through the influence of positivism, the word has become a short-form for "natural science". It is a recent development that society has become the object of an organized body of knowledge which can be standardized and taught objectively, while following its own rules and methodology.

A. I would take Pre-Calculus, since you will have to take Calc in college and this will put you a year ahead. Statistics and Calc can be taken concurrently, so you can just do both of these as a freshman.

Why don't people respect social sciences as a science?
Q. Social science use scientific method, acknowledge only objectively observable results, and utilize statistics to ensure quality research. Why do people still have problems believing that social sciences are in fact sciences?

A. I think people often don't view social sciences as a science because most social science constructs can not be objectively defined. We can come to generally accepted aggreement about what being happy, or intelligent, or angry is, but there is simply no way to identify these types of characteristics in a completely objective fashion. The processes social scientists use to study these phenomena are scientific, but they are starting with imperfect and variable constructs. However, many people also over-estimate the precision of other sciences. The only truly objective science is physics, though this is still limited by our measurement techniques. Also, human thought and behavior is far more complicated than the processes studied in physics.… [cont.]
