A. When my son was a baby he would only sleep for about 45 minutes at a time aswell - I tried everything to see if I could extend the sleep but he just wasn't tired - although until he was about 6 months old he still needed to go down for a nap every hour though. When he started getting more active and crawling and dropped down to 2 sleeps he started having one 45 minute nap and one1 1/2 hour one. The only thing I would say that at 11 weeks if you aren't already try putting him down awake in his cot - not feeding him to sleep or rocking him or anything. As far as night time sleeping goes if you haven't already establish a routine for him i.e. bath, feed, then put down sleepy but awake, and when waking at night for a feed - wait a couple of… [cont.]

What does it mean when a hamster sleeps on his back?
Q. My hamster sleeps a lot. But every couple of days, I see him curled up on his back and I get really scared that he's dead. I try to flip him over and he just wakes up normally. What does it mean when a hamster sleeps on his back? Ok, fancy_rat-lover, If I can flip him over and he wakes up, I'm pretty sure he's not dead.

A. Hi! Actually when hamsters sleep on their backs it's a good sign! It means he is very happy, secure, and content with you. My hamster Poppy sleeps like that quite often. The first time I saw her doing it, I was very concerned (even though I saw she was breathing normally). So, I researched it on the internet and found out that it means you have a happy and content hamster. One time my son and i laughed our heads off, because we looked in on Poppy and she was on her back in her "bat cave" and eating a piece of corn. Talk about content. It was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. Unless, you have concerns about your hamster not breathing normally, changing in eating habits (not eating or drinking), then it's nothing to worry about. How to prevent diaper leaks when baby sleeps 13 hours at night?
Q. I can't complain, my 11 month old baby sleeps really well, about 13 hours a night, but the problem is when he wakes up in the morning, he is soaked in urine. He is already wearing the biggest diapers we can buy, and he's still soaked at least 4 days a week. Any ideas? My son does not wake up if he's wet. Also, he would wake up if I changed him in the middle of the night. He sleeps on his stomach all night long too, so I think that might be part of the problem... the front gets very wet. And, I don't think it's the diaper, because the diaper in the morning is so wet it weights like 5 pounds. Also, he has never gotten diaper rash from waking up soaked in urine.

A. My daughter is nine months and she too sleeps between 12 and 13 hours a night. I use the Pamper's Stay Dry and they work really well. I had tried Huggies and every single time she wore one to bed, she leaked through. Also, if you put your child down a couple hours before you go to bed, you could always go up and change him. My daughter doesn't care for it too much, but she always goes back to sleep. I also offer her two or three ounces because I hate that she goes 13 hours without eating! The biggest diaper isn't always the best idea either. If it's too big, he may be leaking through it because of that. You could also try and compare the absorbency strip in the bigger ones and the smaller ones, they could be different. I know as a child… [cont.]

Is it wierd that my newborn sleeps longer when others put him to sleep instead of me?
Q. My baby will stare at me all wide eyed & bushy tailed after he's been feed, changed & everything. If he does sleep, it's no longer than an hour before he's up staring at me again. However, when my mom takes him to relieve me...he sleeps for hours at a time. Should i be concerned? Does he think his grandmother is his mom & i'm merely his sister...cause that's how it feels!

A. My parents are visiting right now and I noticed the same thing! I think it's because your baby is attached to you and wants to stay awake to spend time with you :-) When I'm by myself with my newborn she's fidgety and always wants to be held, with my parents around she's perfectly happy when they put her down in the crib to take a nap. So you should be happy that your baby is already so attached to you, enjoy your time with him :-)

How do I tell my girlfriend that she sleeps too much?
Q. She sleeps 10-12 hours a day between naps and her nightly sleeping. Sometimes she "needs" to take two naps a day. Whenever i bring it up she always tells me that she's "stressed and sleeping relaxes me" and basically she doesn't think she sleeps that much at all. I love her tons but it's getting pretty annoying. Please help!

A. Maybe you should take her to the doctor. Maybe she has some sort of sleeping disorder, even though she's sleeping so much, she may not be getting enough REM sleep, which is vital for normal functioning.

How do you make a dog stop barking at night, when he sleeps outside?
Q. My labrador sleeps outside and he barks almost every night, not for a long time, but briefly. I'm afraid the neighbors might start complaining. He barks for good reasons, like when people are walking around by our gate, but for the people who are inside trying to sleep, it might not be good to hear. How do I make him learn to bark less often, and only when there's REAL trouble? I can't scold him when it's late at night and go outside. If someone walks by and he's sleeping, he'll hear it and wake up. (He's a very light sleeper.)

What are your thoughts on older children caring for themselves while a parent sleeps?
Q. Let's say 10, 11, 12+ year old kids. Mom works day shift, Dad has to work nights to make ends meet. At least one parent is home at all times, but Dad sleeps until noon because he gets off work at 4 am. Do you think it's wrong of the Dad to sleep until noon with let's say two kids ages 10 and 13 at home? Do you think those two kids are capable of caring for themselves for a few hours as long as Dad is there?

A. I think it's fine. It's not like the parents are just being lazy--they have to work. I think it would be unreasonable to expect Dad to stay up. If a parent is there, they can wake them up if something is wrong.

How do I stop my dog from peeing where she sleeps?
Q. We have 3 labs and the youngest has started a bad habit of peeing and pooping where all the dogs sleep. For the most part, the youngest dog (1.5 years) sleeps inside with us at night but in the day we put her with the other 2 in an outdoor kennel and doghouse. She always pees and poops in the clean cedar shavings, and will sleep in it but I feel for the other 2 as they have to work hard to try and dig themselves a place that doesn't have her pee in it. How do I break her of this habit??
Asked by Erica H - Sun Nov 26 14:55:13 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Sounds like the dog is peeing in an outdoor kennel where there are cedar shavings for bedding. What you may want to do if it is possible, is create a Sand Box for the dog where it can go potty and train the dog to go there instead of the bedding. You would be redirecting your dog from the bedding to the box. If that isn't practical and they aren't in the kennel too long, you may have to potty train the dog to an area you want her to go in outside. You may need to use a crate and put her in it while she is in the outdoor kennel. Take her out to where you want her to potty before she goes to bed for the night and first thing in the morning.

How many sleeps should my 5 month old baby be sleeping during the day?
Q. My baby boy is breastfed his bedtime is at 9:30pm waking up about 3-4 times a night, and finally waking at 9 oclock am he has about 4 sleeps during the day 45 min to an hour each sleep. When will he decrease these sleeps to twice a day?
Asked by Tulay - Tue Aug 5 07:03:15 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think by 5 months no more than 3 naps or better 2 long naps. He is probably breastfeeding to simply sooth himself back to sleep. Start by waking him a little earlier about 7.30am and then down for a nap about 10-10.30 and let him sleep for about 1-1/2hrs and then again a nap about 3pm and wake at about 4.30pm and then make his bed time about 730pm -8pm. It may help him sleep longer during the night; but if he is comfort feeding you may find that he still wakes a couple of times and wants to be feed so he can sleep.

How long does your 2 month old use to sleep at night? mine one sleeps only for max 3 hours at night. wht 2 do?
Q. in the morning she sleeps not more than one and a half hour to 2 hours max at at strech, after that she wakes up either for feeding or diaper change or just to sleep in my arms. ever since she is born, i havent slept for more than 3 hours at a strech. how to increzse her sleep hours? when do they start sleeping for longer hours?
Asked by Aquagal - Sun Jan 27 09:54:55 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's totally normal for baby to wake every 2-3 hours for the first few months. My twins were waking for feeding/diaper changes every 2-3 hours for the first 3 1/2 mos of their lives. Then one day, quite suddenly, they both slept for around 5 hours straight! My boyfriend and I both had to go check on them to make sure they were okay! LOL From that point on, they gradually increased their sleep, and now sleep around 8 hours straight through the night. There's nothing you can really do to increase their sleep right now, just let it happen naturally. Some people suggest adding rice starch to the formula at bedtime, but I don't know if that works since I breastfeed my twins. Good luck, and i promise it will get better!

How many hours in between should a 3 month old baby boy be awake between sleeps?
Q. My on is 3 months and one week old, the last couple of days his awake for 1 and a half hours between sleeps, is this normal? Is it too much at this age to stay awake? He is breastfed...

A. Yes, completely normal. At that age my daughter also was awake for only 1.5 hours. Then at around 4-5 months she managed 2 hours between naps and now at 6 months its about 2.5 hours. Every baby is different so what ever works best for your little one, do it! Cheers

should a father allow his 21 year old daughter to sleep with him and he sleeps naked?
Q. He has let his daughter sleep with him, on occasion, since he was divorced 14 years ago, but now that she is an adult, I feel that she should not sleep with him, especially since he sleeps naked.

A. You're right, she shouldn't sleep with him. But she may not think anything's wrong with it, since it's gone on so long. People only realize there's something amiss in his/her own life when it's brought to their attention that other people simply Do Not Do It. It's probably perfectly normal to her, but as her friend, you should either get information for her on sexual abuse (and even if he's never touched her, this is an implicit form of abuse), or encourage her to contact an abuse or crisis center in the area. If she won't, it would probably help if you did, so you can find out from someone with experience on how to talk to her about it. Since she's an adult, legally, no one can file charges on her behalf. But she should be… [cont.]

Our new puppy sleeps so much is that normal ?
Q. We adopted a little german shepherd mix from our Humane Society - The little one is about 3 months old . She is very quiet, doesn't like to play to much and sleeps most of the day and night. She goes to the door if she needs to go outside but I am just worried that all that sleeping is not normal Any ideas ? Thanks for all of your answers - I might add that I got the Pup last Friday just for over the weekend and seeing we are Expats and not sure how long we stay here we first decided against the adoption and brought her back to the Humane Society on Monday - By Tuesday morning we were certain no matter what we wanted her and got her for good ...She had bite marks when I got her back on Tuesday so she hadn't have a good day there and I… [cont.]

A. Depending on how recently you got the puppy, it is possible for her to feel a little blue because she misses her littermates. It is also a big transition that she just went through...coming into the Humane Society, getting adjusted to that, and now having to readjust to your home. Give it some time and if she doesn't seem to be coming around, talk to your vet.
