Hypnotic (also called soporific) drugs are a class of psychoactives whose primary function is to induce sleep and to be used in the treatment of insomnia and in surgical anesthesia. Because drugs in this class generally produce dose-dependent effects, ranging from anxiolysis to production of unconsciousness, they are often referred to collectively as sedative-hypnotic drugs. Often the treatment of insomnia will not begin with drugs at all. Since many hypnotic drugs are habit-forming, a physician will usually recommend alternative sleeping patterns, sleep hygiene, and exercise before prescribing medication for sleep, due to a large number of factors known to disturb the human sleep pattern. Hypnotic medication when prescribed should be used for the shortest period of time. The benzodiazepine and nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic medications also have a number of side effects such as daytime fatigue, motor vehicle crashes, cognitive impairments and falls and fractures. Elderly people are more sensitive to these side effects and a meta analysis found that the risks generally outweigh any marginal benefits of hypnotics in the elderly. A review of the literature regarding benzodiazepine hypnotic as well as Z drugs concluded that these drugs caused an unjustifiable risk to the individual and to public health and lack evidence of long term effectiveness due to tolerance. The risks include dependence, accidents and other adverse effects. Gradual discontinuation of hypnotics leads to improved health without worsening of sleep. Preferably they should be prescribed for only a few days at the lowest effective dose and avoided altogether wherever possible in the elderly.

What is a natural, easily-obtainable substitute for sleeping pill?
Q. Like caffeine is supposed to help you concentrate/keep awake, then I would like to know what is the opposite. Because sleeping pill have side-effect and is difficult to get. Two things: It should be fairly easy to find in the market, etc and preferably it should be an Asian/Chinese thingy because that's easier for me. Thanks a lot. God bless.

A. I am an MD teaching Alternative and Complementary Therapies at a large medical school, and even though your might get some relief from things like valerian root, melatonin or chamomile, I believe nothing works better than breathing exercises and a cool, dark bedroom. Part of the going-to-sleep process involves your eyes noting that it has become night, which stimulates natural brain urges to start the sleep cycle. A cool environment make the body slowly begin to lose body temperature, which is also part of the body going to sleep, and will make you feel sleepier. The breath work that makes me drift off at night starts with me breathing in to the count of 6, pause, and breathing out to the count of 6 pause. I do that a couple of times,… [cont.]

is there a sleeping pill i can buy to make my dog drowsy on a long coast to coast flight?
Q. i am taking our 10 week old puppy on a plane. can i get a sleeping pill from a vet, and is this a good idea?
Asked by triguyinla - Fri Nov 9 21:37:46 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Like the above stated, some airlines will not allow a sedated pet for liability reasons... so call ahead. as for sleeping pills, a vet will probably prescribe a dosage of a sedative called Ace (acepromazine), or similar. Your vet will know the proper dosage and medication that will be helpful on the flight, and will tell you when to administer the medication before the trip. but again, call ahead to the airlines. and do not give human meds like benedryl without a vet's advice on dosage.

Can i take a sleeping pill with a vicodin?
Q. I took 1/2 of a vicodin about 7 hours ago. can i take a sleeping pill now?
Asked by Baby Jack born 4/5/09 - Thu May 31 23:45:39 2007 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I can understand taking half a vicodin as they make me dizzy sometimes too. 7 hours is plenty of time. but why did you not take another vicodin. As it should have helped you sleep. Just do not take vicodin and tylenol pm because vicodin has acitamonophin same as teylenol. If you take ibuprophin with the vicodin it will make it work better to stop the pain and can be combined at the same time and will combate any side effects. And eat something when takeing them. if you doubt me you can call your pharmisist. they are very bright. Speaking of which i think my tylenol pm is kicking in.
