Sleep is a naturally recurring state of relatively suspended sensory and motor activity, characterized by total or partial unconsciousness and the inactivity of nearly all voluntary muscles. It is distinguished from quiet wakefulness by a decreased ability to react to stimuli, and it is more easily reversible than hibernation or coma. It is observed in all mammals, all birds, and many reptiles, amphibians, and fish. In humans, other mammals, and a substantial majority of other animals that have been studied (such as some species of fish, birds, ants, and fruit flies), regular sleep is essential for survival.

The purposes and mechanisms of sleep are only partially clear and are the subject of intense research.

How can I get the sleep I need and feel refreshed in the morning?
Q. I get 8-9 hours of sleep per night, and I usually sleep fairly soundly. I've tried drinking warm milk and listening to soft music before going to sleep, and I avoid caffeine and sweets before going to sleep. I know I do not suffer from any sleeping disorders and I am looking for a non-medicated way to feel refreshed in the morning after sleeping. I want a NON-Medicated way to do this, please and thank you. :)

A. If I am lucky I sleep 4 hours a night. I always have. If I have a "bad" night, I sleep 1 or 2 hours, and then have to have a nap of 1 or 2 hours in the day. Sleeping pills, barbituates, and narcotics have no effect. It used to bother me, but I have adjusted to this sleeping pattern. I never get cranky anymore, and I have never been lethargic from lack of sleep. My thought patterns and cognative abilities have never been compromised from a lack of sleep. I have never been formally diagnosed, but I know I am an insomniac. I think it is an overactive brain that is the cause. (Analyze this, analyze that, ect.) It should be noted that I can also stay up for literally hours at a time with no caffiene or other stimulant drugs. It has… [cont.]
