The content and purpose of dreams are not fully understood, though they have been a topic of speculation and interest throughout recorded history. If it was just random firings of neurons then wouldn't it just be flashes of random things and not connect in any way? Some dreams are like that but what about the ones that piece together a story? You just let your mind wander and write whatever comes to it. That is what your subconscious mind is doing, just "free writing".
