How do I go about the USMC while having severe ADD/ADHD?
Q. I want to pursue a career in the Marines. I will attend college and major in ROTC before I enlist. That way I may go in as an officer. I have severe ADD/ADHD and take medicine daily. I was wondering what I can do about this. Thank you, Cadet Private First Class DeLoach

A. Unfortunately, having any severity of ADD/ADHD will automatically disqualify you from any branch of the military. The reason is there is no way they will be able to give you medicine daily.

Can people with ADD/ADHD join the military if they get therapy?
Q. I know you can't if you are on medicine, but what if you get therapy or a life coach. Can you join the military? I am thinking I want to join to defend our country, but I can't because I take medication for ADHD and General Anxiety Disorder. So if I get off the medicine and get a life coach or something could I join?

Do you believe ADD/ADHD is a legitimate medical problem?
Q. Or is it simply a way for doctors and pharmaceutical companies to make more money? I'm not saying it's not real--I'm sure some people do truly have it. But I highly doubt as many people have ADD/ADHD as the statistics show.

As someone who has wondered that myself, who is also trained as a "therapist," I fully understand why so many people doubt that ADHD is a true medical condition. Over the last decade, we have seen a sharp rise in ADD / ADHD diagnoses, fueled by ongoing speculation that the pharmaceutical companies are looking to make more money. Another popular "myth" I hear is that this diagnosis is an easy way for teachers and the school system to control students with bad behavior.
