hibernation?
Q. is it okay to just hibernate my computer instead of shutting it down all the time? what's the difference between the two? is the power consumption the same? is it safe to regularly hibernate instead of shutdown? can i replace hibernation with shutdown? the way i see it, my computer starts up faster when coming back from hibernation, rather than a full blown startup.
Asked by the questioner - Mon Dec 11 21:01:02 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'll answer you with what I do: On my home desktop, I use standby mode. On my laptop, 90% of the time I put it in hibernation instead of powering it off. Standby keeps your system's state in RAM and keeps just enough power to the CPU and memory so it wakes up quickly. Hibernation saves this same information to the hard drive, in a special file (hiberfil.sys). The computer will use very little power in hibernation, and will use a little more in standby. You should completely poweroff or reboot your computer once a week to keep the memory leaks at bay, but between reboots, hibernation should work just great for you. There aren't any data-loss concerns of using hibernation over shutting down.

What is the relationship between hibernation and anasthetics?
Q. How similar are the effects of hibernating and being placed under anasthetics, for example with Nitrous Oxide or any of the standard surgical anasthetics. Can hibernation provide insights into anasthetics or vice versa? These both seem to be sleep-like states -- how are the related or possibly connected? Are there chemical similarities at the cellular level, or in brain psysiology?

A. None that I know of, and I've been practicing anesthesiology since 1990. BTW, nitrous oxide is an incomplete anesthetic at normal atmospheric pressures. We tend to use halogenated ethers, like sevoflurane and desflurane. Nitrous is an adjuvant, and a lot of us don't use it much.

Is hibernation important to successfully breed snakes?
Q. I know winter is the time for hibernation, but is it a must for breeding?
Asked by Vanessa - Fri Jun 4 22:32:38 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I cool down all of my colubrids (kings, corns, milks, etc.). I keep them in complete darkness for three months at temperatures between 45 and 60 degrees and don't feed them. Water is always available. Some snakes will occasionally breed without a cool down period, but cooling them down guarantees sperm production in the male and stimulates their natural cycles, giving you a much better chance of them mating and a higher fertility rate. With tropical snakes such as boas and pythons, I let the ambient temperature drop just a little in the winter, but continue feeding them.

What's the difference between hibernation and sleeping in computer terms?
Q. In computer terms, what's the difference between hibernation and sleeping? and which one saves more energy?
Asked by Totsie - Tue Feb 2 11:13:09 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Technically most computers theoretically support six states, called S0, S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5. S0 is what you or I would call On, S5 is what we would call Off. Of the states in between one will be assign Sleep and another Hibernate. Normally Sleep is a mode in which the processor is powered down but the memory is still powered. Moving between S0 and Sleep should take moments, but power is still being used to power various bits and bobs around the machine. S4 is normally Hibernate in which the computer is all but powered off. This involves flushing memory out to disk and so moving between S0 and S4 can take a little while. Often machines are set to sleep after a short while and then hibernate a while later, if no activity has occurred.

A. Hibernation is a state of inactivity and metabolic depression in animals, characterized by lower body temperature, slower breathing, and lower metabolic rate. Hibernation conserves energy, especially during winter. Hibernation may last several days, or weeks depending on species, ambient temperature, and time of year. The typical winter season for a hibernator is characterized by periods of hibernation interrupted by sporadic euthermic arousals wherein body temperature is restored to typical values. Hibernation allows animals to conserve energy during the winter when food is short. During hibernation, animals drastically lower their metabolism so as to tap energy reserves stored as body fat at a slower rate. Animals that hibernate include… [cont.]

A. Seems like everyone was answering your question in the opposite. Well i have the answer for you. You need to setup a scheduled task to run the program. With scheduled tasks, you can make tweaks to enable the program to run either when pc is idle, when you log on and stuff like that. Now what you will need to do is just before you click on finish, check the box that says launch advanced settings (or something close to that) On the new dialog box click on settings and at the bottom you will see power management. Make your necessary adjustments to have it work for you. I have done same thing with limewire. I have it wake up the computer (you can select that option too) and runs. Hope this helps and if you need to email me feel free will check… [cont.]

How hard would a Bear's faeces be after months of hibernation?
Q. I've always wondered with all that sleeping during hibernation and all that eating before hibernation... where would all that food go? i'm sure that bears dont have toilet breaks like us in the middle of the night and just wake up and let it all out.

A. wow, think of constipation. Actually bears do have toilet breaks while hibernating. As do bats and other animals. Yes, it does expend energy for them to wake, but then they go back to sleep. As long as they don't have to wake to much they are okay.

Why does my laptop come out of hibernation by itself?
Q. I have a Dell Inspiron XPS M140 running XP Media Center Edition. It randomly comes out of hibernation on its own. Last night I hibernated it and this morning it was up and running (with the lid closed!) I've checked power settings and nothing should be bringing the computer out of standby or hibernation. Any ideas? I'm positive that it is hibernating. When it hibernates a bar goes across the screen saying to wait while it hibernates, then the screen goes off, fans shut off, lights go off, the computer seems completely turned off. When I turn the computer back on it "boots" while saying it is resuming Windows. Sometimes when I come back to it though, it's already running. When this happens and it's in the laptop case it gets really HOT so… [cont.]

What is a good helpful purpose for "the effect of temperatures on ladybug activity and hibernation" ?
Q. How will this science fair topic better the world? The effect of temperatures on the hibernation and activity of ladybugs?
Asked by Lady bug - Sun Apr 20 02:08:58 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. lady bugs are very important in organic agriculture. It's good to understand the cycles of lady bugs, and how temperature effects them is important because they are needed in greenhouses during the winter. The greenhouses would have to be at the right temperature so the lady bugs put inside would be active and feeding on the pest insects that damage crops inside greenhouses. That's the only reason I could think of. Although, is it really bettering the world to make more food to feed an ever-over-expanding population of human beings that is already to big for the earth to support sustainably? I think not. I'm sure that is not a question that will come up at your science fair, however.

A. I am not sure where you hear about this in hamsters, but none of mine have ever hibernated. They are not outside in the cold and have no reason to sleep through winter. Just keep your house nice and warm...if you don't see your hamster awake its probably because it wakes up when you are asleep. Regardless of what you have heard, hamsters are NOT nocturnal, they are Crepuscular which means they are most active at sunset and dawn. However, they are all on different schedules. If your hamster is not waking up even when you stroke it, there might be something wrong.

Asked by Hot T-Bone - Fri Jul 14 20:54:04 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Standby and hibernation are two alternatives that are particularly important for laptop users seeking to conserve battery life. Rather than logging off from a user session and turning off the computer, you can choose either standby or hibernate. Windows XP significantly increases the speed of going into and coming out of standby and hibernate. Standby is a low power state from which you can resume working with your desktop and applications intact. When using standby the contents in memory are kept in volatile RAM. Many newer laptops resume from standby in less than two seconds. Hibernation saves the contents in memory to disk in compressed form, allowing the computer to be turned completely off. Again, you can resume with your desktop and… [cont.]

How can I get my computer to reboot from hibernation up to the "choose user" page?
Q. When rebooting from hibernation previously, my computer would go to the page to pick a user. Now it reboots straight to whoever put it in hibernation. I would like it to go back to how it used to reboot, so you can pick the user. what i want is to be able to hit hibernate then when turning back on, choose whichever user i want without having to log off BEFORE hibernation.

A. If you go to the "Choose User" page, is there a button on there to choose hibernation? As I understand it, hibernation restores the computer to the way it was. Or, did you used to have it go to the 'choose user' page when your screensaver went on? It could be a related setting?

Asked by Liz T - Thu Oct 11 19:21:11 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Technical answer? Hibernation will keep power to the memory subsystem so that page files are not lost and your RAM does not lose the information stored within. This keeps the computer from having to load, execute, and manage all the necessary files to boot since the information is already available. It draws a bit more power than being off altogether...due to the fact that your last session is currently being stored in the memory subsystem instead of being erased. This gives the user a quicker response when "waking up" vs. a cold boot. Long story short...lose power, RAM and page files are erased. But if you draw enough power to maintain a static charge...you can keep everything as is without having to boot the next time you sit down.… [cont.]
