I started it because I was involved on a lucid dreaming online forum, and they had a section for dream journals. So I kinda did it just for the heck of it. IMO, dream journals are very tiring to keep up with. When you put into words what happened in your dream, it can take up plenty of space even for a short dream. But I still keep one. I seriously doubt they are necessary for everyone; however, I clearly remember more dreams and more OF my dreams since using a journal. If this was only for dream recall, you could use a voice recorder instead of writing in a journal. Seeing that you have lucid dreaming in mind, there's the issue with dream signs (common things that occur in your dreams) that you might want to consider.
