Barbiturates are drugs that act as central nervous system depressants, and, by virtue of this, they produce a wide spectrum of effects, from mild sedation to total anesthesia. They are also effective as anxiolytics, as hypnotics, and as anticonvulsants. They have addiction potential, both physical and psychological. Barbiturates have now largely been replaced by benzodiazepines in routine medical practice - for example, in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia – mainly because benzodiazepines are significantly less dangerous in overdose. However, barbiturates are still used in general anesthesia, as well as for epilepsy. Barbiturates are derivatives of barbituric acid.

Q. I have been taking Ativan,(lorazepam) prescribed by my Dr. but in a drug test it showed that not only did i have Ativan but also a barbiturate in my system. I haven't taken any other meds. Doe's Ativan also show up as a barbiturate on a drugs screening test?

A. I believe it does. I've been given ativan while in the hospital, and if I remember right, it is a barbituate.

A. doubtful... but for all things considered the user is better off not doing both or either-- better for health. The psychological tramua of going through withdrawls is a feisty fight but it can be done (Imho). Numeorus celebrities have battled addiction. I reccomend contacting an AA homepage for their professional opinion on this question.
