Sleep is a naturally recurring state of relatively suspended sensory and motor activity, characterized by total or partial unconsciousness and the inactivity of nearly all voluntary muscles. It is distinguished from quiet wakefulness by a decreased ability to react to stimuli, and it is more easily reversible than hibernation or coma. It is observed in all mammals, all birds, and many reptiles, amphibians, and fish. In humans, other mammals, and a substantial majority of other animals that have been studied (such as some species of fish, birds, ants, and fruit flies), regular sleep is essential for survival.

The purposes and mechanisms of sleep are only partially clear and are the subject of intense research.

How can I sleep during the daytime?
Q. I work early mornings at least once per week (from 6:00am-2:00pm), I am usually very tired during the afternoon and I want to take a nap, but I have trouble sleeping during daylight hours. Is there any way I can catch up on sleep better during the afternoon, without losing sleep through the night?

A. If you live alone, which probably works the best for this. Stop what you are doin' the very moment you become tired! Nothing else is important, just drop. It can all wait. Cause' 90 percent of all of it in the world is nothing but B. anyway! Close the blinds. Turn everything off. All the lights, the sound, everything. Take care of the pets first. They are the greatest of friends. Got earplugs? Blinders? Have them at the ready, in the nightstand. Keep The Room Cool! Temperature wise, cause that can make the biggest difference in metabolic rate. Then put up the feet! Forget about everything! Enjoy. Forget about all cares and woe. Ever try breath counting meditation? One deep breath in, fewww, let out. Count one on… [cont.]

What effect can sleep deprivation have on my brain?
Q. I have, intentionally and unintentionally, been deprived of sleep for several months now. I also suffer from depression. I believe this may have an impact on my grades. It's weird, though. I feel like a total mess in the morning when I get little to no sleep, but I don't feel much different when I do get sufficient sleep. I am able to concentrate in my classes to some degree, but I often find my mind drifting off and thinking about the multitude of problems that have pilled up in my life. It's very frustrating because I often have to put in a great deal of effort to study for a test when some people don't spend much time studying and do way better in tests than I do. I know that depression may cause memory loss, but I just don't know… [cont.]

A. here's webmd's big bunch of articles on sleep deprivation: however, your problem seems to stem more from stress over school. i suggest if you start talking to someone about it, be it a school councellor, a good friend, or perhaps an older relative who may have gone through the same thing or can otherwise empathize. if it gets really bad, maybe you should seek professional help. yeah, head shrinkers have a bad connotation to go along with them, but when your whole world seems like a better place, when problems don't seem so unmanageable anymore, etc. etc. they'll be worth it. or perhaps you could look into yoga and or getting professional massages. also about your observation that not getting a lot of sleep feels the same as getting… [cont.]

When will newborn start to sleep for longer periods?
Q. How many hours does everyones baby's sleep at night? My baby is almost 4 weeks and wakes up every 2 hours, sometimes even more often than that to eat. Im just wondering when she will start to sleep more? She is eating like 4 ounces every feeding. I read she she be eating that much per feeding but like every 4 hours not 2. How much does your baby eat , how often, and how much does she sleep. Anyone know when baby's start to sleep for longer periods also? Any info would be great!

A. I know how hard it can be to think you will never sleep again! The waking up should slow down soon and if it is all about being hungry and you are concerned surly talk to your dr. My daughter had such a crazy appetite that we started giving her, with the dr;s go ahead, some little cereal in her milk just at night before she would sleep. this has its own side effect though...gas and constipation. but when you are totally deprived sometimes things can seem hopeless and everything is harder. Remember you are not alone and it will get better!! I swear. hold on, from one mommy to the next.
